The Round House Wednesbury

The Round House is a true labour of love and artistry spanning 25 years to build, stands as a testament to sustainable sophistication and masterfully constructed from recycled materials salvaged from schools and churches from across the West Midlands; a singular masterpiece perched on a plot that spans over one acre at the highest point of Wednesbury.

Geoff and Gills 'A touch of Trentham' Garden

Inspired by near by Trentham Gardens, the brief was to create a contemporary family space, that gave that Capability Brown essence, vistas to view, with flow and movement throughout the year in a naturalistic sustainable style.

Pool House Farm Courtyard

Anne and Mike decided to give their farmhouse courtyard a full design work through as it was looking a little forlorn, unloved and lost. 

Walls were removed, a new boundary wall installed and internal walls clad in light oak stained lath screening to give a sleek contemporary flow, replacing cracked and flaking render. 

A Solihull Sanctuary

A total redesign of this rear garden was completed for Margaret and James. A stylish contemporary patio area now sits in its place. This is on a raised platform with five soakaways installed to deal with the flood water that impacts the site during the winter months.

Chesterton Mill Cottage

A garden set in the middle of the Staffordshire countryside. A country courtyard; lush mixed planting compliments the hard landscape and blends seamlessly into the open countryside beyond.

Codsall Barn Conversion

Jo and Tony have lived in there barn conversion for quite sometime and decided it was time for a makeover of the front and rear gardens. 

The front garden forms part of the Staffordshire Way a route used by many walkers and the brief here was to create something stunning but appropriate for the walkers to see as they wondered past on their travels.

Terrys Garden in Harbourne

Living in a terraced house in Harbourne Terry had longed for an interesting low maintenance garden space that matched his busy lifestyle; somewhere to come home to at night and sit with a glass of wine and relax after a hard day in the city. 

Around in Circles

A circular theme was designed throughout with circular lawns accessed by crescent shaped pathways and reflected by flower circles that stand proud and lead you through the garden spaces. Summerhouse, potting shed and boulder trickling water feature surrounded by a shingle beach; plus woodland area with cool fernery and planting that gives all year round interest and a sense of style.

Alison and Darrens Contemporary Charisma

As a professional and busy couple Alison and Darren commissioned Darren Rudge to bring some contemporary charisma to their rear garden for them to relax and enjoy this space. The existing site was overwhelmed with mature trees and shrubs and a large turf area that was generally unfriendly and uninviting.

Kelays Contemporary Chic

The Kelays are a couple that wanted to take the clean lines and contemporary style of their home into their garden space. As busy professionals the brief given was to provide an area to entertain, relax and enjoy urban living; with secluded areas where they can sit quietly.

Carol and Alan’s Garden

This Four Oak landscape is has been a 360 degree project. With front side and rear gardens totally transformed. The front garden now is simple and stylish mulched with golden flint and to break the sea of gold highlights of plum slate, beach cobbles and Scottish pebbles give a dry riverbed effect.

Mandy & Nicks

After a complete life as a family garden; now the children have flow the nest it was time for a revamp.

This design was built on three levels; level 1 the lower level is paved and sweep clean; widened for additional access. Level 2 is a family patio but now for large family parties that include the grand children.

Love Lane Courtyard Classical Styling

Stourbridge couple Liz and Steve commissioned Darren Rudge to bring some classical styling to their small but drab courtyard. Overpowering trees and shrubs were removed and tall double skinned surrounding walls built giving a walled garden feel in classical red brickwork.

Streetly Garden

This garden created for a brilliant retired couple contains a raised bed with pond and reclaimed sandstone, bog garden, nectar bar with verbena, Doronicum and digitalis for the bees and butterflies.

Contemporary Sustainability

Darren Rudge was asked to create a garden area for a family with older children. 

The client particularly wanted the garden to reflect sustainability issues and to use as much as possible reclaimed or recycled materials, plus to have a contemporary feel.

Kerb Appeal

This property had undergone considerable modernisation giving a clean modern living style. Darren Rudge was commissioned to create an attractive but low maintenance driveway planting that leads via a flight of steps to a formal raised bed area as you enter the property.

Patio Paradise

A small garden where a middle aged couple wanted to give a feeling of space and memories of holidays they had undertaken in south America and Cuba; particularly romantic meals in secluded patio courtyards.

Biome Dome

As part of a five person team which included fellow colleagues David Ponton, Wayne Pope and Andrew Ball; The Biome Dome was a community based exhibition garden that incorporated the themes of pollution and leisure within a futuristic town environment. 

Multiplicity

Co-designed with fellow design colleague and lecturer Helen wood, multiplicity was set in a back yard surrounded on all sides by a traditional victorian brick boundary wall. 

Around & About

Co-designed with design colleague and lecturer Helen Wood; Around and About highlights the environmental and economic improvement of the Black Country in relation to its people, plants and biodiversity. 

Birmingham Borders - The Wet Room (Bathroom) (2008)

A border designed by Darren Rudge that gives a quirky view showing a range of plants that need damp or humid conditions to grow. An almost reclaiming of the space by the plants seems to be occurring here. The display included carnivorous plants as well!!!

Continuum

Co-designed with fellow design colleague and lecturer Helen Wood, Continuum is a garden where events of the past and plans for the future, meet in the present.

Naturally Playful

Naturally Playful was awarded a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal and Best in Show Awards in the show garden category.

Co designed with fellow design colleague Helen Wood Naturally Playful’s brief was “By exploring the world around us and interacting
with nature, the garden reminds children just how good playing in the great outdoors can be.”

Cultivating Young Minds

Cultivating young minds; a garden of investigation, stimulation and play for the children of Little Bloxwich School

Darren Rudge Landscape and Garden Design were commissioned to install a garden that would stimulate children and get them to investigate their environment linking to objectives to be achieved in the national curriculum.

Room to Grow

A garden area created by Darren Rudge for the use of school children and the wider community. 

The garden consists of a sensory area and two working areas.

Compton Care, at Compton Hall

Compton Care, at Compton Hall (formally Compton Hospice) Garden of Reflection is now complete. A great project taking a woodland space and creating a woodland dell for peace and self reflection. Sleeper raised beds are planted with a range of plants to give rest and relaxation.

Willenhall Park Memorial Garden - Featured on BBC Midlands Today

Darren Rudge was invited to design and install a memorial garden that honours the ultimate sacrifice made by the soldiers from Willenhall in World War One at Willenhall Memorial Park

Druids Heath Community Garden Birmingham - BBC Make a Difference Campaign.

BBC Make a difference campaign; Druids Heath Community Garden Birmingham. After consulting the community who live in Druids Heath Birmingham, their one wish as most live in high rise/ tower block accommodation, was to have a safe place for their children to play.

The Big Venture - BBC Make a Difference Campaign.

A community centre in Wolverhampton closed by the local authority and rescued by the community. They had an area of wasteland unused full of weed but no funds to convert this into a growing and learning space.

Keys – The Gallery Garden

Walsall arboretum devoted a space for a gallery garden; the first of its type in this country where outdoor art in all its forms can be displayed.

Co designed by Darren Rudge with designer Helen Wood, keys is a conceptual garden space designed and implemented as a permanent feature within the gallery garden.
