Cottage Garden With a Modern Twist

A couple preparing for retirement and with grandchildren in mind wanted their period cottage given an appropriate cottage garden with a modern twist.

The hard landscape consists of natural limestone paving with raised beds constructed from limestone blocks; constructed to give a unified flow to the space. A timber canopy was constructed to accentuate the main doorway and a pergola with Rosa, Lonicera and Clematis planted against it; both constructed from seasoned oak.

A water feature was created using a reclaimed hand pump trickling into the garden well. The planting was created deliberately to flow and to give a riot of full summer colour as requested by the clients; with many of the larger shrubs also being retained from the original garden giving instant structure.

With a kidney shaped lawn, rustic archway and large planted stone troughs the garden is finished with a herb area situated by the kitchen entrance for the lady of the house to use in her cookery.
