Contemporary Sustainability

Darren Rudge was asked to create a garden area for a family with older children.

The client particularly wanted the garden to reflect sustainability issues and to use as much as possible reclaimed or recycled materials, plus to have a contemporary feel.

A large raised deck area was created as the client liked to entertain. This was constructed from a reclaimed scaffold structure used as the sub frame and topped using reclaimed scaffold boards to create the deck surface.

Steps lead down into the garden area which is naturalistically planted adding texture, colour and diversity which is also lower in maintenance; giving a totally different feel to the open and free area of the upper deck.

A crushed brick pathway leads you to the lower end of the garden which is obscured by a screen constructed of reclaimed traffic sign posts.

The lower area consists of a small vegetable area and a garden office; raspberries, white and red currents are also grown here. Finally the client wanted to be able to use the garden at night and as such is lit by garden candles and solar powered lighting.
